The Southern Courtyard
The building’s original design included a large vegetable garden at the southern end of the hospital to produce food for patients. This vegetable garden was directly accessible from the kitchens, which were located on the garden level and were fitted with an enormous fireplace and bread oven. Over time, the vegetable garden space began to be used for other purposes.
After the hospital was relocated, the City of Carpentras organised outdoor shows for a range of audiences in the southern courtyard, as the space is sheltered from the harsh mistral wind. Many well-known performers have put on shows in this open-air venue with room for 3000 standing guests.
